For this story I chose to write about my grandma and the great depression. I asked her to try to explain to me her memories of her life as a child growing up through one of the worst times in the history of our country. My grandmother then told me when she was a little girl she moved from up north to Milwaukee. Her mother had a job at a grocery store, and another job scrubbing floors at a hotel. Her father had a job selling coffee that they kept in a barrel in the kitchen. The depression was starting, jobs were very hard to find, and there was barely enough money to pay for the rent and put food on the table. It cost 75$ for a three room apartment. Milk cost 10 cents a court, and most people were lucky to have a place to live and milk to drink. The stock market crashed, so people didn’t have much money at all. The depression ran from 1929-1941. The great depression was a dramatic, worldwide economic downturn starting in most places 1929 and ending at different times in the 1930’s for different countries. Construction was virtually halted in many countries. Farming and rural areas suffered as crop prices fell by 40 to 60 percent. The end of the depression in the U.S is associated with the set war economy of world war ll, beginning around 1939.
